Bob or Cesc: Which former Arsenal midfielder gave you more ‘wow’ moments?

Today’s topic is:

Who wowed you more during his days at Arsenal – Robert Pires or Cesc Fabregas?

This may be a tough one but isn’t that the point of ‘Throw the Topic’ discussions anyway?

If you had to pick between Fabregas and Pires for who was the better attacking midfielder for Arsenal over the last decade, who would it be?

Edin Dzeko plus cash for Robin van Persie?

throw the topic (logo)Welcome to Throw The Topic (formerly Fantasy Debate)

This is where an interesting question/topic is posed for your responses. The comment with the most number of thumbs up will obviously be the best response made in the debate.

Today’s topic is:

If Man. City were to offer Dzeko plus some cash (about £5-8m) for Van Persie, would you want Arsenal to accept it?

Wtih Robin van Persie now widely known to be on the verge of an Arsenal exit after announcing his decision to not renew his current contract, specualtion over the big transfer deal which will seal his departure has mounted.

For more of this, follow us on Twitter or join us on Facebook.

After netting 37 goals in an outstanding campaign last year, Van Persie has attracted all sorts of interests around Europe, but Juventus and Manchester City are reproted to be the serious contenders for his services.

Indeed, the latter club are looking to offload out-of-favour attackers in order to afford a place for Van Persie. And that brings about the question of whether Manchestr City will offer complete cash for Van Persie or – in a move similar to the Gallas/Cole deal – make a ‘player plus cash’ bid. Ultimately, the unsettled Edin Dzeko – who has fallen behind Tevez, Aguero and Balotelli in the pecking order – will be the man to offer.

So what if the blues offered Dzeko and around £5-8m of cash for Van Persie? Deal or no deal?

Personally, I think Edin Dzeko is a terrific prospect. Not only was he magnificent in the Bundesliga, he was world class at the start of last season (remember the FOUR goals at Spurs?)

His form only declined because he was not getting starts from Mancini (any played would). But he even half-won the title for Manchester City by scoring the vital equalizer to make it 2-2 against QPR on the final day. Dzeko would start for ANY team in the Premier League and at just 26 years of age, he’s still has more football to offer than Van Persie. Not to mention the fact that he does not have any ridiculous injury problems like RVP.

By the way, last season and 2008/09 are the only seasons RVP has ever lasted the entire campaign since arriving at the club in 2004.

In fact, I doubt City will be stupid enough to offer us the talent of Dzeko AND cash for RVP. But the only time we can strike this good deal is now – while RVP has not been stricken by some mysterious ankle injury or something

Lukas Podolski may be on his way to Arsenal this summer while Arjen Robben’s contract situation at Bayern Munich is also being closely monitored by English clubs.

Best match against Spurs at the Emirates stadium?

http://www.arsenal.com/assets/_files/images/import/-images-pics-report-tottenham22122007_3.jpgWhat was the best match against Spurs at the Emirates stadium?

Sunday will bring north London’s big foes together again for the first time since October.

And memories from past clashes will also be brought back as the Gunners face the rare task of having to upset a Spurs side sitting above them on the table and classed as favourites for the derby.

The tables might truly be turning in this rivalry which was once comprehensively dominated by Arsenal after Wenger’s men recently lost a long unbeaten record against Spurs.

There has hardly been a boring north London derby at the Emirates stadium ever since the Gunners moved to their new ground.

From the 3-0 win – which had two penalties – in the first ever meeting there in 2006 to the 4-4 draw in 2008 along with the ’11 second derby’ in 2009, north London derbies at the Emirates never disappoint.

But what is YOUR favourite match against Tottenham Hotspur which took place at the Emirates stadium?

Which means more? Finishing above Spurs or Champions League qualification?

Which means more? Finishing above Spurs or qualifying for Champions League?

Arsenal almost always qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal almost always finish above Spurs.

Well, this year may be different.

At the moment, the Gunners are still behind the pace for a top four finish which would secure participation in Europe’s elite club competition next year while their fierce local rivals sit 10 points ahead of them in third on the table.

Yes, you may argue that finishing above high-flying Tottenham would mean a top four finish anyway, but which scenario would you rather have if Arsenal were not to get the luxury of finishing above the old foe and also qualifying for the Champions League at the same time….

1)Tottenham collapsing to finish 6th while the Gunners finish ahead at 5th but still fail to qualify for the Champions League.

2)Arsenal finishing 4th but behind a third placed Spurs.

If you can’t have both, what would you rather have?

Who really is better – Gibbs or Santos?

Both are currently injured as Arsene Wenger searches for a ‘quick fix’ replacement, but when the dust settles and Andre Santos and Kierran Gibbs are available, who at all should be Arsenal’s No. 1 left-back?

Gael Clichy’s move to Manchester City left that void wide open, and that summer exit might have been delightful for those who felt the Frenchman was declining in form.

But Clichy’s departure has caused a dilemma over who Wenger should deploy at left-back more often – in case the boss opts to use Vermaelen primarily as a centre-back.

Andre Santos can be found wanting in defense sometimes, but he is good as a forward when he attacks. The former Fenerbache man showcases a touch of Brazilian skill and classy finishing in front of goal. And that, for Wenger’s attacking-minded tactics, is always ‘bingo!’. Then there is Gibbs, who is more dynamic as an attacking threat from full-back compared to Clichy – since he does not limit himself to just crosses from the flanks – but the Englishman, truly defends with his pace and that is not always enough to stop the opposition.

Incidentally, since Santos’ arrival happened during Gibbs’ lay-off, both defenders have never been available at the same time for selection.

They have been injured at the same time – with Gibbs the prime ‘Mr. injury-prone’ – but who do you really fancy to be Arsenal’s first choice left-back between the two?

Best moment of 2011?

Today’s topic is:

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lgrs9jY1HT1qca69q.jpgWhat are your best and worst Arsenal moments of 2011?

The year of 2011 which began with Arsenal almost neck-and-neck with Manchester United in the title race will be ending with the Gunners begging to mingle with the red devils in the top four.

Such is the extent of the different circumstances which occurred during this calendar year at Arsenal Football Club. There were ‘highs’ like that night against Barcelona at the Emirates and ‘lows’ like losing to Birmingham in the Carling Cup final. ‘Highs’ like securing five signings on transfer deadline day and ‘lows’ like losing star players in the summer. ‘Highs’ like storming Stamford Bridge with a scarce win and of course, ‘lows’ like the 8-2 humbling at Old Trafford.

The Gunners are still picking up the pieces to their once turbulent season as we enter the new year. Yes, there is one more game to go this year (QPR clash on Saturday) but look back at the past 12 months and pick the moments (bad and good) which will be lingering in your memory.

What was your favourite memory of Cesc?

It is finally official, Cesc Fabregas is back to being a Barcelona player.

Since being recruited by Arsenal at a 16 year-old, Fabregas set several records as the club; from youngest ever player to youngest ever scorer and most recently, youngest ever captain.

But a homesick Fabregas cited he was not getting any younger and in the midst of Arsenal’s run of barren years, chose to return to Barcelona.

During his eight years at Arsenal, Cesc did live up to the promise he showed following his arrival in 2003, but his failure to lift a trophy as a senior member of the team will have some fans feeling the 24-year-old left with his job undone.

Fabregas is finally gone nonetheless, and for the many who grew sick of annual transfer rumours over his departure, this news is greeted with relief as much as disappointment.

But what moment will remind you the most about Arsenal’s former No.4?

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/images/2010/1117/shaygivenbench20100829_275x155.jpg

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given on a five-year deal and will unveil their new player on Tuesday.

Given is without a doubt a man who had been coveted by most Arsenal fans who have seen the club pay the price for shot-stopping blunders in recent seasons so it may come as a surprise that the Irish goalkeeper was indeed available for sale at Man. City but was just not pursued by Arsene Wenger.

Give your opinions: Is the promise of Szczesny and/or Fabianski enough to disregard Given or is this an opportunity missed?

Which Arsenal player would you not pick a fight with?

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4149/5044626967_01f912860a_z.jpgIt’s official, Arsenal have the most ‘babies’.

The Gunners were recently revealed officially as the average lightest and shortest squad in the Premier League while Sunday’s opponents Chelsea were found the tallest and heaviest at an average of 6ft 1 and 13.1 stone.

Indeed, those facts are of no surprise to many who have witnessed the Gunners buckle under physical pressure – mostly away from home.

And through the additions of the likes of Chamakh and Squillaci, Arsene Wenger seems to be gradually addressing Arsenal’s lacking physical factor, the main shortcoming opponents exploit against his side.

The opposition’s strategy to out-muscle Arsenal has grown ever since the departures of the physically imposing (and successful) class of Adams, Keown, Vieira, Gilberto, Pires and company.

But who are the tougher men in our squad today?

Manchester City’s eclectic squad has grown even stronger this summer. And after the additions of Yaya Toure and David Silva, the Eastlands club have arguably the deepest and most star-studded squad in the Premier League.

But is that enough for them to be a real threat to the Gunners’ pursuit of the title and a stay in the top four or are Mancini’s men not yet there for you?
