Update on Martinez as Bayern respond to Arsenal

Javier Martinez may be set join the list of Arsenal’s unsuccessful transfer targets.

News circulated earlier today that the Gunners had made an enquiry for the Bayern Munich midfielder, but according to the club’s press officer Markus Hörwick, the German champions will not consider the sale of Martinez.

The 25-year-old was part of the Spainish squad which conquered the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 European Championship before joining Bayern only two years ago in a £32 million deal.

Despite having three years remaining on his current contract at Bayern, the message has been made clear that Martinez is not fully committed to a stay at the Allianz Arena after missing out on regular first team football under new boss Pep Guardiola this season.

Martinez would fill the void in defensive midfield for Arsenal

Martinez, who was a favourite in Bayern’s treble winning squad under Jupp Heynckes last season, recently admitted his troubles under Guardiola.

“I don’t have as much freedom on the field anymore,” he said. “I don’t get forward as often and my game is a little more static. The coach [Guardiola] believes that I can play in any of the central positions and I’ll play where I’m needed.”

But this will still not mean the end of Javier Martinez’s time at Bayern Munich after a member of the club’s public relations department Markus Hörwick told German newspaper Bild that a move to sell the Spaniard will not be negotiated with any club.

If Arsenal were to fail in any pursuit of Martinez, it would be the second year in a row that a Bayern midfielder had snubbed a move to the Emirates stadium after Luiz Gustavo opted for Wolfsburg last summer.
