Arsenal had to squeeze their way out of Villa Park with the three points after surviving a fight back from the hosts to return to the Premier League’s summit with a 2-1 win.
Quick fire goals from Jack Wilshere and then Olivier Giroud looked to have put the game to bed even before half-time but 2-0 is always a dangerous lead and when Christian Benteke pulled one back for the home side with less than 15 minutes to go, it got very, very nervy.
But the character of this Arsenal side is also very, very strong and top of the league they remain after dodging everything Villa threw at them in the dying minutes today.
Arsene Wenger after the match:
“It was a big win for us, it was about two different halves. The first half was about playing our game with the speed of our passing and controlling the game,” he said
“The second half was more about fighting, I felt it was down a little bit to first of all a different style from Villa who played three through the middle and a very direct game. Maybe we were a bit too cautious just to keep the 2-0. But it was about fighting and our defenders kept us in the game.”
