We didn’t even try to defend – Wenger

gunners, walcott at etihad

Arsenal’s lead at the top of Premier league was cut short after some pouring action at the Etihad stadium ended in a 6-3 defeat.

The scoreline may tell you otherwise but in all fairness, for a side which had been handed little time for preparation after the Napoli trip, the Gunners did manage to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City today.

Through a pair of Walcott strikes on either side of going behind 1-0 and then 3-1, Arsenal made quite a contest of this one. But their undoing was some defensive lapses against a side well known to be rampant, before a tired show in the dying minutes of the game made the damage look worse.

Still top of the table though, Arsenal’s confidence should not suffer too much damage.

Arsene Wenger was in his usual defiant mood at full-time but after watching his side score three at the Etihad and still fail to even snatch a point, the Gunners’ defending had to take some blame.

“It is not beyond a bad day, it is a bad day. We conceded six goals, we lost our discipline at end and were too open when I took Flamini off.” Wenger said.

“Out of the six goals we gave them five and when we came back to 2-1, we had a chance but could not take it.

“They scored the goals and you cannot say they did not deserve them. We have to come back to reality and it’s about us defending together and we have not done that today.”

  1. For fuck sake–when will this guy just say I take my hat off…6 goals put past your GK and you have this to say. Sigh

  2. Can Mr. Wenger just man up & take responsibility? The fuck’s he on about? You field a lame-duck, ineffective unresponsive almost lazy Giroud guy as your central- actually- lone striker and then u can complain about not taking obvious, begging chances? It’s sad your team can’t best none if the Top Four. Deal with it.

  3. jack wilshere was awful today. Got monreal exposed all afternoon refused to help. Also flamini was the one bursting forward while ramsey sat deep strange.

  4. Jack Wilshere should do well to step up his game.
If he cannot dribble in the middle of the park especially, then he has to quickly pass the ball.
As for Giroud, I know Arsene himself will feel seriously embarrassed for not buying a top striker in the summer.

  5. Clearly losing Koscielny early on had an effect, and the problem with Giroud is his conversion rate is not that good, about 1 in 5 I believe.

The problem is that Giroud does a lot of good work elsewhere on the pitch, if not necessarily in front of goal, and because we see him as a striker, we tend to overlook that.

Getting the whole thing in perspective, in monetary terms we’ve paid as much for our entire squad as they’ve paid for one of their player’s toenails, and considering that we were one on target striker away from certainly equaling, if not beating them, I don’t think that’s too bad.
    COYG!

  6. Yes it is not nice to concede so many goals but at least we put three past them which normally would have got us at least a draw. We must put this result behind us and concentrate on beating Chelski. At the end of the day City throw money around like confetti so anything they achieve is a hollow victory. Let us get behind the team. We will get our revenge against the two Manchester clubs when we play them at home. Up the Gunners!!
